How long does wood heating typically take to warm up a room?
Modern steel slow-combustion heaters heat up quickly, often radiating comfortable warmth into the immediate area within 15-20 minutes of lighting. The time it takes to heat the entire house depends on the unit’s size, the home’s insulation, and whether it uses radiant or convection heat.
How do I know which model is right for my house size?
Every model is rated for a specific heating capacity (e.g., up to 232 sq/m or 350 sq/m). You should measure the square meterage of the area you intend to heat and choose a model that matches or slightly exceeds that size. We highly recommend booking a free consultation to accurately size the unit based on your home’s ceiling height, insulation, and climate zone.
Is wood heating really still efficient and environmentally friendly?
Yes. Modern, certified wood heaters are highly efficient. They burn wood almost completely, minimizing particulate emissions and maximizing heat output, as per strict Australian Standards (AS/NZS 4013). When using sustainably harvested wood, it’s considered a carbon-neutral energy source, as the CO2 released during burning is equal to the CO2 the tree absorbed during its life.
What's the difference between Radiant and Convection heat?
Radiant: Emits direct, intense heat from the hot surface to warm people and objects immediately (like the sun). Best for draughty homes or areas with high ceilings.
Convection: Warms the air around the firebox, which then circulates throughout the room, providing a gentle, even warmth. Best for open-plan living areas and well-insulated homes.
Can I heat my entire home with one unit?
Yes, provided you select a unit with the correct heating capacity (measured in square meters) for your home’s size and layout. For larger or complex homes, a convection unit with an optional fan is recommended to help distribute the heat more effectively to distant rooms.
How often do I need to clean out the ash?
It’s best practice to leave a thin bed of ash in the firebox, as this helps insulate the coals and establish a good bed of heat for the next burn. You generally only need to empty the ash every 3 to 7 days, depending on how often you use the heater and the size of the firebox.
What types of wood heaters do you get?
